Srinagar : The name Srinagar made by two names – Sri and Nagar. Sri means Goddess Lakshmi and Nagar means City. So it is called Srinagar. The independent Hindu and the Buddhist rule of Srinagar lasted until the 14th century when the Kashmir valley came under the control of the several Muslim and Mughal rulers. It was also the capital during the reign of Yusuf Shah Chak, an Independent Kashmiri ruler who was tricked by Mughal Emperor Akbar when Akbar failed to conquer Kashmir by force. Akbar established Mughal rule in Srinagar and Kashmir valley. When Mughal empire finished after the death of Aurangzeb, infiltrations of Pashtun tribes increased in entire Kashmir Valley. There after Kashmir Valley came under the rule of Sikh. Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab province captured a major part of Kashmir Valley, including Srinagar.

Places of interest :
Dal Lake : Dal Lake is situated in the hub of the city of Srinagar, the summer capital of the State. This lake is also known as Jewel Of Srinagar. It is said that a village named Isabar to the east of Dal Lake was the home of Goddess Durga and known as Sureshwari. Today the lake is an important source for commercial operations in fishing and water plant harvesting and a famous tourist spot.

Shankaracharya Temple : is situated on the Gopadari Hill and it is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The temple dates back to 200 BC, although the present structure probably dates back to the 9th century AD.

Shalimar Bagh : The Bagh was built by Mughal Emperor Jahangir for his wife Nur Jahan, in 1619. During the Mughal period in particular, Emperor Jahangir and his wife Nur Jahan were so enamoured of Kashmir that during summer they moved to Srinagar with their full court entourage from Delhi at least 13 times. Shalimar Bagh was their imperial summer residence and the Royal Court. They crossed the arduous snowy passes of the Pir Panjal mountain range on elephants to reach Srinagar.
